Workshop on Developing Communication Skills and
Professional Competence

A one day seminar, held on 12th August 2017. This was jointly organized by English Department of Bengal College of Engineering and Center for Language, Culture and Translation Studies, School of Humanities, Netaji Subhas Open University. The seminar was held at the Bengal College of Engineering, Bidhannagar, Durgapur, West Bengal.
The seminar was for the first second and fourth semester B.Tech students from three Engineering disciplines of the College. Which were Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Electrical Engineering.
The resource persons from the University were greeted with bouquets at the Conference hall of the College. After a formal meeting with the dignitaries, Prof. Sanchita Bandyopadhyay, the Principal of the College, Prof. S. Bramhacharya, Dean, Bengal College of Engineering and Technology and Prof. Dr. Alok Kumar Bharadwaj, Principal, Bengal College of Engineering and Technology, and Prof. R. R. Pandey, Principal Bengal College of Polytechnic, the introductory session began with a welcome address by the Principal of the College. The theme and the activities for the day were introduced by Dr Sumana Bandyopadhyay.
In the second session, Mr Srideep Mukherjee introduced Communicative English to the learners and discussed its various features. Dr Bandyopadhyay spoke on the basics of communication skills, soft skills and professional competence. After introducing the theoretical aspects, the students participated in activities based on theory. Out of the one hundred and sixty students, majority were girls. Also maximum responses came from the girl students. The different areas for the ‘Activity based on theory’ were Language, Communication, Interview, and Writing.
In the third session, the students participated in activities on ‘Communicative Competence’. In this activity, the focus was on Language development, and oral practice. The students in groups of ten individually spoke on the discussion topics. Other than these there were also activities on Reading and Writing Skills development. The practice materials and the activities for the workshop were designed by Dr Sumana Bandyopadhyay. After the third session, certificates were distributed to the participants. The Seminar ended with a vote of thanks.
Soon afterwards, the organizers arranged for a short discussion on the student participation at the Department of English. Mrs Arpita Mukherjee, of the Department of English introduced some of the student members of the seminar. The organizers had made a request of conducting more of such seminars in future. This was followed by a photograph session with the students.
